Lucy

Lucy studies A Level Mathematics, Economics and English Literature and has set her sights on a career in law, with aspirations to qualify as a solicitor. She has already secured an offer to study Law at King’s College, Cambridge, reflecting both her academic excellence and commitment to her chosen field.

Since joining NHGS in Year 12 as an external candidate, Lucy has embraced the academic and social opportunities available in Sixth Form. She reflects on her transition into the school:

“I chose NHGS due to its prestigious reputation and the academic opportunities that I could be provided. I had researched the GCSE and A-level results and felt they were exemplary, so I was aware of the academic rigour displayed by students and wanted to be in an environment where excellence is nurtured. When I attended the open evening, I was inspired by the students; I found my dedication, drive and ambition mirrored in the sixth formers I spoke to. As an external candidate, I was nervous to begin sixth form, but immediately I felt completely welcomed, met like minded individuals and felt a sense of belonging. NHGS has been the perfect place for me, both academically and socially.”

Lucy plays an active role in the wider school community. She is a Reading Ambassador and helps to run the Lower School Book Club, encouraging younger students to engage with reading and develop a love of literature. Her enthusiasm for discussion and argument is also evident through her involvement in debating competitions and the Psychology Society.

Her achievements in debating are particularly notable. Alongside three other students, Lucy reached the top eight teams in the North West and Wales in the ESU Schools’ Mace competition after winning the regional final of the English Speaking Union Schools' Mace competition.

Leadership is another key aspect of Lucy’s contribution to school life, acting as Head Prefect and the founder of the Law Society, helping to create opportunities for students interested in legal careers. She is also a member of the Oxbridge Form, which provides targeted support for progression to highly competitive universities.

Reflecting on her experience at NHGS Sixth Form, Lucy highlights the sense of ambition and community:

“The best thing about NHGS sixth form is the knowledge that you’re surrounded by future doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers. In every person you meet, you are introduced to someone who will have a part in shaping the future of the UK and potentially the world. The focus on the enhancement of students as not only high achievers but also confident young people is integral to the ethos of the school, and I think this is what makes NHGS sixth such an exceptional place to study.”

Outside of school, Lucy enjoys attending music concerts and reading.
