Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At NHGS we are committed to supporting all students, including those with additional needs, to achieve their potential and to realise their dreams and aspirations.

Meet the Team:

Mrs Terry - Acting SENDCo

I am the school's Acting SENDCo (Teaching) and this means that I work with the SEND team to ensure that all students have access to the curriculum and school life irrespective of any issues or difficulties.

I am in school on Monday, Thursday & Friday and I can be found in the SEND Office near to the Library.

Outside of school, my interests are football, running and travelling.

Mrs Wood - Deputy SENDCo

I am the Deputy SENDCo (non teaching) and Exam Access Arrangements Manager and support the SENDCo and SEND team in school, to ensure that all students have access to the curriculum and school life, irrespective of needs.  I am a passionate advocate of inclusive education and moved to work in education in 2019, following a long career as a project manager.

I work Monday mornings from home 8:30-12:30 and Tuesday to Thursday in school 8:30-14:30, in the SEND office near the Learning Resource Centre.

Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family and reading.

SEND Review 2024:

The key findings resulting from the SEND Review conducted in March 2024.

Key strengths identified:

  • The leadership team demonstrate a clear vision for SEND and inclusion.  They have an accurate picture of the strengths of the school and of priority development areas, which are addressed in strategic improvement plans.
  • All staff seen by the review team demonstrate a consistent, caring ethos and culture, and show positive relationships with each other and with students.  Staff maintain high expectations for conduct and behavior and the reviewers observed excellent behavior from students throughout the school.
  • Most students and their parents spoke warmly and positively regarding the support provided by school.  They were also able to provide examples of personalised curricula and support.

Key recommendations:

  • Prioritise further embedding a whole school ethos and culture of inclusion, across staff and students, particularly in reference to neurodiversity and disability.  Staff should be encouraged to reflect on the positive use of inclusive language and model this to students.
  • Continue to embed adaptive teaching approaches to support all students.  Reviewers saw some good examples of adaptive and inclusive teaching, however this was not always consistent.
  • Continue to embed the development and consistent application of co-produced ‘One Page Profiles’ to capture students’ strengths, challenges and what staff need to know in relation to reasonable adjustments for them.
