Sharpening soft skills to get ahead in actuarial science

Ashbel studies A Level Economics, Mathematics and Physics at NHGS Sixth Form and hopes to pursue a career as an actuary after university. His choice of subjects demonstrates strong analytical ability, numerical literacy and a willingness to tackle challenging and technical topics - qualities essential for success in actuarial science.

Actuarial science applies advanced mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk, requiring problem-solving skills, attention to detail and sound judgment in uncertain situations. However, technical expertise alone is not enough to stand out in this competitive field. Softer skills such as public speaking, teamwork, communication and leadership are equally important, enabling actuaries to explain complex concepts, collaborate effectively, and contribute confidently to strategic decision-making.

During his time at NHGS Sixth Form, Ashbel has actively developed these skills. As part of the Open Evening, he delivered a presentation on the theatre’s main stage about his experiences as a Sixth Form student. He reflects, “I learned how to engage an audience and convey my experiences clearly,” an experience that enhanced his professionalism, self-assurance and credibility - qualities that will support his future in actuarial science.

Ashbel has also undertaken the rigorous Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. Through planning and taking part in expeditions, volunteering and pursuing personal challenges, he developed leadership, teamwork and problem-solving abilities, while learning to manage his time effectively and stay resilient under pressure. These experiences fostered confidence, adaptability, and strong communication skills, all of which complement his academic strengths and are highly relevant to a career in actuarial science.

Mr Fountain (Gold D of E Leader) described the expedition element of the course, and Ashbel's contribution: “The four-day, self-sufficient Gold D of E expedition is a substantial challenge for all participants. It required Ashbel to move beyond his comfort zone, responding to the physical and mental demands of self-sufficient travel through wilderness, at times in severe weather, and including a wild camp in a remote location. Ashbel played a key role in his team's successful completion of their expedition, caring for and supporting others through adversity.”

In Year 12, Ashbel further demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills while supporting the Year 9 camp trip. Working alongside school staff, he guided younger students through activities and base camp responsibilities, reflecting, “I gained confidence in mentoring younger students and coordinating activities,” an experience that strengthened his ability to lead and collaborate effectively.

Ashbel’s tutor has been impressed by his resilience, kindness and quiet determination, commenting: "Ashbel approaches his studies with maturity and integrity, setting high standards for himself even when faced with challenges.

What stands out most is his resilience and work ethic. He meets difficulty with perseverance and a genuine willingness to improve. Ashbel also shows strong empathy towards others, supporting his peers and leading by example.

Ashbel’s growth over his time in Sixth Form reflects not only his intellectual ability, but also his strength of character."

Together, Ashbel’s strong academic foundation, analytical aptitude and well-developed soft skills position him well to thrive in the field of actuarial science and stand out in a competitive environment.
