Core Mathematics (Level 3 Certifcate)

Overview:

Develop mathematical skills in mathematical thinking, reasoning and communication, with cross curricular applications. An opportunity to build mathematical confidence for students who do not want to study a full A Level in Mathematics. This is particularly useful for students studying Biology, Psychology, Economics, Business Studies or Geography.


Course Structure and Content:

The Core Mathematics qualification is designed to better prepare students for the mathematical demands of study, employment and life. The course has been developed with employers, universities and professional bodies as valuable preparation for university study and employment. Compulsory content covers the analysis of data (data collection, calculation of statistics such as mean and standard deviation, statistical diagrams), personal finance, estimation, critical analysis and use of spreadsheets.

Assessment:

The qualification is studied over the course of one year and examinations are taken at the end of the Lower Sixth.

There are two papers, 1 hour 30 minutes each.

Future career opportunities:

This qualification is highly valuable for any student planning a future that requires good quantitative skills, whether that be in further education or employment. Some universities will take into account a Core qualification gained in Year 12 during the UCAS application process and make a lower offer as a result.
