Course Content
Autumn and Spring Term
Students spend these terms looking at coastal environments and natural hazards. Students will be studying the physical geography of distinctive coastal landforms and the evolution of the coastal systems. The hazards section will look at issues caused by climatic, tectonic and wildfire problems. Students will look at the contributing factors that cause these hazards. At the end of the coastal and hazards geography students will study how these issues are managed to reduce the negative impacts on humans.
Summer Term
Students will begin this term looking at the changing places unit, studying why areas are seen differently by different groups of people. It is a mix of urban geography and psychology. Students will also begin work on the carbon and water cycle unit looking at how decisions by governments and businesses are increasingly being made at the global level. Students will also begin to focus on the skills work this term in preparation for the field course in North Wales. Preliminary work on the formulation of individual Non-Exam Assessed (NEA) titles will begin this term in order for students to be ready to undertake their own individual data collection in the summer vacation.
Homework
Homework will be set once a week in line with the school’s policy at Key Stage 5. It could be a creative, research or a learning homework depending on the nature of the material required to support the student’s work in class for that module of work. Students are encouraged to spend 4-5 hours a week reading around the topics being studied, adding work to their well organised study files.
Assessment
Folders will be marked in accordance with the school marking policy. End of unit tests and pieces of work will be used to gauge progress throughout the year. There is a formal mock exam at the end of the year to determine the progress made in the year and to provide predicted grades for those students applying to university through the UCAS system.
