Marston

Connor Marston joined NHGS in September 2020 and was appointed to the Extended Leadership Group in September 2026. Mr Marston is a teacher of Music and Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) and has held responsibility positions in both subjects at NHGS. Prior to joining the school, Mr Marston taught in North Yorkshire and previously in Málaga, Spain. 

Twice a graduate of the University of Leeds, Mr Marston’s studies in education centred around research in male engagement at Key Stage 4 and he contributed to the All-Party Parliamentary Group paper on the matter, in connection with the British Council. Having studied both Music and MFL at university level, Mr Marston introduced the current offer of GCSE and A Level Languages trips and Music Tours at NHGS, and has led on a number of domestic and international trips. He was Deputy Leader for the Year 8 trip to St. Omer, leading to his qualification as an Extracurricular Visits Co-ordinator. Mr Marston also completed the National Professional Qualification in Leading Teaching back in 2023 and has led mentoring, coaching and CPD to staff. 

Mr Marston enjoys the variety of activities at NHGS which happen outside of the classroom. The Carol Service at Halifax Minster is one of his annual highlights. Mr Marston has initiated various projects the school has run over recent years, including collaborations with the English Chamber Orchestra (in which he directed the ECO as part of their performances in Calderdale), has taken students to the national Translation Bee finals at Cambridge University and has been involved in working with our partner schools abroad. 

Under Mr Marston’s leadership of the Music department, he secured Music Mark status for NHGS and more recently the school became the Lead School for Music in Calderdale. Mr Marston regularly contributes to the advisory board for secondary music across West Yorkshire. 

Outside of school, Mr Marston has contributed to his local parish church as Choirmaster and Organist and he was previously the Musical Director for Leeds Concert Band. Nowadays, he prefers to perform for fun, usually with his saxophone ensemble LS Sax. In the little spare time he has, Mr Marston enjoys some light DIY projects and spending time with his young nieces and nephews, but can often be found in an airport departure lounge heading off on an adventure abroad!
