Mrs Carrigan retired and moved to Calderdale in October 2013 after 44 years in education. Improving the teaching of mathematics was a passion and she became involved in several projects for expanding the types of approaches to teaching and learning mathematics. She led mathematics and pastoral teams in several secondary schools, before moving into senior management and using her knowledge of statistics to help refine school data analysis and self-assessment. In 2000 she moved to working for West Sussex Local Authority as a mathematics adviser then into data analysis and school improvement. She was trained as an Ofsted inspector and as a School Improvement Partner and became part of the School Challenge programme. In the last few years of her career she became the Principal Adviser for School Improvement for all West Sussex schools and settings.

Retirement has allowed an opportunity to serve as a Local Authority governor for NHGS and she is now Chair of Governors at Castle Hill Primary School whilst remaining as an associate governor at an outstanding school in West Sussex. Getting to know and becoming involved in the local community is a priority. She is serving as a town councillor and actively participates in the Three Valleys Gospel Choir, reading groups, and The University of the Third Age. She also allows time for getting to know Yorkshire with her grandson and for taking trips to Singapore to see her granddaughter.
