Further Mathematics - Year 13



The Edexcel GCE A Level Further Mathematics course is taught. This involves two compulsory units of Core pure mathematics and two options.

The course is examined in the summer of Year 13 through four, 1 ½ -hour written examinations:

Paper 1 – Core Pure Mathematics 1, Paper 2 – Core Pure Mathematics 2, Paper 3 – Option 1 and Paper 4 – Option 2. All contribute 25% to the total mark.

NHGS students will take Option 1:  Further Statistics 1 and Option 2: Further Mechanics 1

Entry in Y12 at Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Further Mathematics (8FM0) may be allowed where appropriate (e.g. students studying 4 subjects in Y12 or those applying to medical schools).

This would require: 

Paper 1: Core Pure Mathematics (*Paper code: 8FM0/01)

Written examination: 1 hour and 40 minutes

50% of the qualification

Paper 2: Further Mathematics Options (*Paper codes: 8FM0/2A-2K)

2E: Further Statistics 1 and Further Mechanics 1

Written examination: 1 hour and 40 minutes

50% of the qualification.

  • Quality of tests.

Further Mechanics 1

  • Momentum and impulse
  • Work, energy and power
  • Elastic strings and springs and elastic energy
  • Elastic collisions in one-dimension
  • Elastic collisions in two dimensions


Formal homework is set each week for Core pure mathematics and an application (statistics or mechanics). Initially this will be practice questions but will later involve revision with examination questions in preparation for tests. In addition to teacher assessed work, students should be completing approximately 3-hours of independent study.


Internal assessment is by ongoing regular tests of taught content. These generally correspond with monitoring periods. There is a more comprehensive examination of Year 12 work in the summer term. Mock examinations are taken in March of Y13.
