French - Year 12

Overview

This 2 Year A level course, assessed by WJEC Eduqas provides and engaging and exciting opportunity for students to build on their previous study of French.  Through social, intellectual, historical and political cultural themes, students will be able to develop their linguistic knowledge and cultural understanding of France and other countries and communities where French is spoken. An opportunity to study film will allow students to undertake a deeper analysis of language structures and increase their cultural awareness as part of an integrated approach to language learning.  A strong focus is placed on building students’ confidence and fluency in spoken French using relevant and topical themes.


Course Content

Autumn Term

Theme 1: Being a young person in French speaking society

  • Families and citizenship
  • Youth trends and personal identity

Grammar: Consolidation and further development of grammatical points covered at GCSE, including:

All verb tenses in the indicative, adjectives, relative pronouns, reflexive pronouns, si clauses, negation, verbs followed by the infinitive, present participle


Spring Term

Theme 2: Understanding the French-speaking world

  • Media, art, film and music in the French-speaking world.
  • Regional, culture and heritage in France, French-speaking countries and communities.

Grammar including the subjunctive, object pronouns, passive mood,

Study of a French film Intouchables


Summer Term

Theme 1: Being a young person in French speaking society

  • Education and employment opportunities

Grammar: consolidation

Introduction to reading literature: Boule de Suif by Guy de Maupassant


Homework
Homework is set by each French teacher every week and will be designed to:

  • Reinforce the learning from the lesson with written and/ or learning exercises/ vocabulary
  • Prepare and research for the next lesson by reading and producing written work for following lesson


Assessment
Internal examinations in Year 12, comprising:

  • Speaking examination: presentation and discussion about the film studied
  • Discussion based on stimulus card relating to one of the themes studied in Year 12
  • Writing examination, including listening, reading, translation and an essay about the film studied
