Economics - Year 12


The course followed is the Pearson Edexcel A Level in Economics A.

Students develop knowledge and understanding of core economic models and concepts in the two themes of Markets / Market Failure and The UK Economy. Students will need to apply their knowledge and understanding to both familiar and unfamiliar contexts in the assessment and demonstrate an awareness of current economic events and policies.

Course Content

Autumn Term

Theme 1: Introduction to markets and market failure

This theme focuses on microeconomic concepts. Students will develop an understanding of:

  • nature of economics
  • how markets work
  • market failure
  • government intervention

Spring Term

Theme 2: The UK economy performance and policies

This theme focuses on macroeconomic concepts. Students will develop an understanding of:

  • measures of economic performance
  • aggregate demand and supply
  • national income
  • economic growth
  • macroeconomic objectives and policy

Revision of Theme 1


Homework is set regularly, and in most instances a week will be given to complete tasks. These tasks will mainly centre on past paper questions and reflect the range of assessment methods used in the final exam. Alongside written homework there will be revision tasks, research tasks and the expectation that students read more widely about the subject.


The subject is assessed at the end of the two year course through 3 exam papers. Questions range from 1 mark responses to 25 mark essay questions, testing 4 assessment criteria:

  • A01 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of economic theories, effects and policies
  • A02 Apply knowledge and understanding to particular economic situations
  • A03 Analyse issues within economics, discussing causes, effects, and the relative merits of any government policies
  • A04 Evaluate economic arguments and use evidence to support informed judgements
