Throughout the course students will develop skills in a range of different medias and techniques, discovering their own strengths and style. The practical element of the program is supported by investigations in to Art History supported by gallery visits both local and further afield in both years.
The best foundation for this course is a good GCSE grade in Art (C or above). You should have a good understanding of the basic elements of art - colour, tone, form, etc., and also some understanding of the place of art, craft and design in the world - its history and its purpose. Drawing ability is essential however this can be fine tuned throughout the duration of the course. Above all, you should have an interest in creating and understanding art and the determination to develop that interest. Good time management and ability to work independently are both essential to the study of Art.
The main aims of the Fine Art course are to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world, realise your place within it and to respond to themes in a personal and creative way. Throughout the course you will develop skills ranging from:
- Drawing and painting - both experimental and traditional
- Printmaking including intaglio, collograph, screenprint and linocut
- Ceramics and 3D sculpture
- life drawing
- modern technologies including elements of photography, digital media and film
- How to present research and analysis effectively in a sketchbook
- Knowledge and understanding of the place of art and design in history and contemporary society.
- Candidates produce a portfolio of work from starting points, topics or themes determined by their centre.
- The focus is on including work that shows exploration, research, acquisition of techniques and skills.
- Candidates select one starting point from a question paper set by their centre.
- Candidates are given a time frame in which to evidence the four assessment objectives and produce a personal response.
Assessment in Art is a constant. The learning is personalised and therefore takes place every lesson via both staff and peers and is fundamental in developing the ethos of assessment for learning. Formal assessment will take place at regular intervals throughout each half term and is linked directly to the assessment objectives and exam board criteria.
