THE CURRICULUM

Entry Requirements:

The School’s aim is to create a stable and orderly environment in which students are able to learn, develop as individuals, and enjoy themselves. There are currently about 300 students in the Sixth Form, engaged in a wide range of courses and activities. We have a general minimum entry requirement of six GCSEs at grade C or above which must include four at grade B or above and C grades or above in English and Mathematics. Grades higher than C may be required for acceptance onto certain courses. Equivalent vocational qualifi cations may be accepted for entry into the Sixth Form.

Sixth Form Qualifications:

The Sixth Form at NHGS only offers A-level courses. Lower Sixth Form work leads to an examination at the end of the year at Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level, equivalent to half a full A-level. Students may fi nish work in a subject at this level, and receive an AS certifi cate; most students will continue to study the subject with more demanding work in the Upper Sixth Form, sitting A-level examinations at the end of the year, and thus gaining a full A-level qualifi cation. It might also be possible to pick up an additional one-year AS course in the Upper Sixth Form.

Students going on to university, other degree level work, and many other routes at 18, are most likely to need three full A-level qualifi cations, and our provision and advice are based on this necessity. We strongly advise students to start four subjects which can lead to a full A-level (although this is not an absolute requirement for entry into the Sixth Form; starting
three or fi ve subjects is possible). This gives an increased fl exibility during the Sixth Form; many students will complete a full A-level in four subjects, while others will fi nish with one subject at AS level, having had the opportunity to decide which three subjects are their strongest. In addition to full A-level subjects, there will be some subjects available to AS level only, and students may combine one or two of these with their
A-level studies.

During their two-years in the Sixth Form students are provided with a range of opportunities to develop their talents in Drama, Music or Sport;experiences to prepare them for future roles such as being a prefect, the Challenge of Management Conference, or work experience; challenges such as the Duke of Edinburgh, debating competitions and Millennium Volunteers that promote personal development together with events and activities such as the Charity Slave Auction, the Christmas Concert and the Young Enterprise Scheme which enable them to get to know who their friends are!

The Sixth Form at NHGS not only treats students like adults but gives them adult things to do!
