Welcome
In
January 2003 the DfES announced that North Halifax Grammar School bid to become
a Specialist Science College had been accepted. The extra funding has enabled
us to develop the Science and Mathematics provision at NHGS and in the local
community; also with parents, partner
schools and sponsors. We built a new science
lab, prep room, work room and office and refurbished two more laboratories
in the Science Department and introduced new interactive
whiteboard technology across the Mathematics Department. Our next project
is to secure further funding to refurbish Science Laboratory 2 and further
develop the ICT provision in Science towards our aim of becoming a lead centre
for science and mathematics education in the region. Please view our
progress towards The
School Improvemet Plan Targets which relate to the Specialist
Science College.
Following Specialist Status, take up of separate science GCSEs has increased from 23 students in 2003 to 79 in 2009. A level take-up is also significantly increased in both Science and Mathematics. We are also very proud of our exam results in both the Science and Mathematics Departments. An extensive programme of enrichment activities has helped raised the profile of these important STEM subjects which the government has identified as crucial to national economic success.
We also have given Sustainability a high profile within the school, having a designated Sustainability Education Coordinator to enthuse the students and drive whole school awareness of its importance on a local, national and international level.
We
have recently acquired a Scanning Electron Microscope in
the Science Department, which can photograph to a magnification of 200,000 times. We
aim to use the microscope to develop links with other subjects, schools and
local businesses. As far as we are aware, we are the only school in the
country to have one, so this is a very exciting development and a unique learning
experience for the students. Please contact Mr Haworth at the school on 01422
244625 or e-mail: r.haworth@nhgs.co.uk if
you would like to take part in this exciting project.
