THE PASTORAL CURRICULUM

Every Child Matters

‘Every Child Matters (ECM)’ is a government initiative which aims to reshape children’s services to help achieve the outcomes children and young people told them are key to well-being in childhood and later life:

- Be healthy

- Stay safe

- Enjoy and achieve

- Make a positive contribution

- Achieve economic well-being

NHGS contributes to students’ wider well-being and achieving the five outcomes by:

- becoming a healthy school; promoting a healthy lifestyle through PSCHE which includes SRE and drugs education; catering provision which promotes healthy eating; encouragement of physical activity including opportunities for sport.

- arranging for safe transport to school; staff supervision and security measures in the school buildings and grounds; dealing effectively with bullying, discrimination and child protection matters.

- creating a school ethos in which students are happy; effective teaching and learning that helps each student achieve the highest educational standards they possibly can; by engaging and helping parents in actively supporting their children’s learning and development.

- ensuring attendance; encouraging students to behave responsibly; giving them a valued voice in the life of the school and encouraging them to engage in voluntary activities to help others.

- providing students with the skills they need for future employment; provision for work-related learning and enterprise education; supportive and appropriate careers education; helping students, parents and the wider community to value education and appreciate its importance in underpinning growth and development.
