Careers Education

Careers Education is an integral part of the PSCHE curriculum in Years 7 to 11. The school works with the Connexions Service and specific support is provided to help students and parents form decisions at 13+, 15+ and 17+. Students use the Careers Match programme in Years 10 and 11 and the opportunity to have ‘mock’ interviews with local Rotarians is also a valuable experience.

The school has held the Calderdale and Kirklees Careers Education and Guidance Quality Mark since 2004. The school has an excellent careers library situated in the LRC and it is available to students at most times. The school also organises a biennial careers conference for students in Years 9 to 13. All Year 11 students have one week’s work experience which they organise with support from the school.

The school has close links with its sponsors for its status as a Specialist Science College. It is a partner school for Costain in its Building Awareness Programme and NHGS students are currently being sponsored by Costain at university. We are also developing links with our other sponsors: Interface Flooring Ltd., Marshalls PLC, Heritage Bathrooms, Kluber Lubrications Ltd., Axiom Displays, BCAD, Martin R Durgan & Associates, Heights Design, Prospect Veterinary Centre, Sable Cosmetics, Southdale Homes and Timeform. We are very grateful for their support.

Destinations

In 2006 98% of the 155 students continued in full time education after Year 11, the vast majority into the Sixth Form at NHGS. 1% went into employment with training and 1% into other training.

In 2006 of the students in Year 13, 87% went to HE, 6% to employment and 7% to other.
