Girls’ U14 Calderdale hockey champions
2008 – NHGS
The
U14 girls’ hockey team
competed in their annual tournament on Tuesday
11 th March at Park Lane school. They were in
a pool with Crossley Heath, Holy Trinity and
Rastrick.
In
the first match v Rastrick after a slow start,
the girls managed to score 3 quick goals to secure
their first win. Goal scorers were Charlie Moss
(2 goals – one a reverse stick shot) and
Emily Marshall. Next match was against the old
enemy Crossleys! The girls started to find their
form and scored twice to register another victory – goal
scorers – Moss and Marshall again. The final
game in the pool was against Holy Trinity who proved
a tougher opponent. After several minutes of stalemate,
Emily Marshall managed to slot the ball home against
a strong Trinity GK to move the girls forward to
the semi finals as winners of their group.
NHGS played Rishworth (who are usually very strong)
in the semis. After a quick tactical chat, the
NHGS girls set about trying to overcome this very
well drilled and well organised team. Again it
was a very close game with both teams having chances;
Rishworth were looking particularly threatening
on the break. However it was the NHGS girls who
asserted themselves and held their shape to deny
the Rishworth team the goals they needed. In fact,
North Halifax took real control and scored an excellent
goal by Charlie Moss which took them into the final!
After a heavy downpour, the final got underway
versus Ryburn who had won through from the other
pool. NHGS were buzzing after their semi final
win and started as they meant to go on, scoring
3 quick goals in the first half! Impressive team
goals were scored by Harriet Wood, Charlie Moss
and Emily Marshall. 2 nd half saw the opposition
come back into the game, but NHGS stood firm with
crucial challenges by Alice Young and Sarah Vine
in defence. Fiona Pilling topped off a stunning
performance with a 4 th goal in the second half,
crowning NHGS Calderdale champions 2008!!!
Congratulations to the squad who played incredibly
well and totally outclassed other teams in Calderdale
on this occasion. Particular mention goes to Charlie
Moss who was playing up a year (she is only in
Y8), and was top scorer for the team with 5 goals.
Also credit goes to Alice Buckle in goal (also
in Year 8) who kept a clean sheet for the whole
tournament!
Many Thanks to Jenni Brennan and Amy Moore for
their help with running this tournament.

U13
NHGS Girls’ hockey team – Calderdale
champions 2008
The U13 team travelled to Park lane yesterday
to take part in their annual Calderdale hockey
tournament. NHGS were drawn in a pool with Brooksbank,
Hipperholme Grammar, Ryburn and Crossley Heath.
The
girls got off to a good start with a 3-1 win
over Brooksbank and a 2-0 win over Hipperholme.
They then faced a tough match against Ryburn who
were down to seven players. With a man down Ryburn
played with added heart and were very difficult
to break down. NHGS struggled to get clear shots
at goal and drew the match 0-0. The final game
in the pool was against Crossley Heath. The girls
played their best hockey yet beating crossley’s
convincingly 3-0 with 2 goals from Charlie Moss
and 1 from Lauren Barrett. They qualified as winners
of their group and went into the semi final against
Hipperholme and Lightcliffe.
The NHGS girls outclassed their opposition and
scored some excellent goals. Charlie Moss was outstanding
again and scored a hat trick. Luan Swainbank added
to the scoreline with her first goal of the tournament.
On to the final against Rishworth.
Rishworth are always very tough opponents and
the NHGS team were worried about playing them.
The game got off to a cagey start with both teams
having chances. The deadlock was eventually broken
by Moss with a straight strike from a penalty corner.
Rishworth had some spells of possession which threatened
the NHGS goal but Ella Davies and Alice Buckle
stood firm in defence. NHGS consolidated their
lead with a second goal from Luanne Swainbank with
2 minutes to go. The girls soaked up the pressure
as Rishworth tried to hit back but it was too little
too late! The U13 team were crowned Calderdale
champions 2008.
Particular
mention must go to the performance of Charlie
Moss who scored 10 goals in the tournament and
was named as “player of the tournament” – a
truly outstanding achievement.
