Year 8 University of Leeds Maths Quiz

On Saturday 13th March, Philippa, Emily, Alfie and Daniel and myself, took part in the National Science and Engineering week held at the University of Leeds.

We were competing against 15 other schools from West Yorkshire, alongside the quiz running simultaneously at the University of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. After completing the quiz we found out that we had come in first place.

After the quiz we were in good spirits after winning and had lunch shortly followed by a lecture called “ Maths in your brain” from Peter McOwan, who is a leading scientist on this topic. He told us all sorts of things including how magicians use mathematics to fool an audience. We all found the lecture fascinating and thoroughly enjoyed our snippet of university life.

At the end of the lecture we headed home after having a fun day out, seeing different sides of maths that we never knew existed. Thanks to Mrs Ward for making this trip possible and also for making Maths so much fun!

Calderdale Science and Maths Quiz

On Wednesday 10th March, Tiegan, Gareth, Thomas, James and myself went with Miss Bouch to the Calderdale Science and Maths Quiz at Heath Training and Development Centre in Halifax. The NHGS team had previously won the quiz for the last two years so we had a lot to live up to, but we did have James on our team, and he had been part of the winning team both years previously. (Four rounds later)… it was close – NHGS 5 points, Crossley Heath 4 points, Sowerby Bridge 3 points! That meant we got to go back to school with our trophy for the third year in a row! As overall quiz winners we also received some WHSmiths vouchers and a Calderdale Science and Maths Quiz t-shirts. We had successfully defended our title. Read the full report here…

The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Challenge

After several Mathematics trials during school lesson time it was decided by our class that Alfie, Alex, Cameron and myself, Daniel would represent the school at the UKMT Team Maths Challenge regional finals to be held at Bradford Grammar school on Tuesday 2nd March 2010.

We started practising with the materials they gave us until we were confident we had a chance. At the competition, we started with 10 practise questions. These were varied in difficulty, some taking up to 20 minutes to complete. One of the most difficult questions was: ‘Find 2 positive integers that have a product of 1,000,000’. These were the types of questions we had throughout the day.

There were 4 rounds. We tackled a number crossword, a group competition , a mini relay and a head to head contest. We were so pleased to have achieved 217 out of 240 points and to come first place in the regional final. We had beaten another school who had been the regional champions for the last five years! We won various prizes including a pencil case, stationary set, bookmark and puzzle.

We have qualified for the National Finals which will be held in London on Monday 21st June. We hope we’re going to do well, but it’s still a massive honour to be representing West Yorkshire in the competition. Our teacher, Mrs Ward, is very proud of our achievement and we are now looking at some fundraising opportunities in order to travel to London and compete in the finals.

Switch Off

Switch Off LogoSwitch Off Fortnight took place nationally from 2 to 13 November. A campaign that's all about encouraging young people to think about how we use electricity and energy. As part of the NHGS campaign we encouraged students to read the electricity meter during the first week and then in the second week 'Switch Off' and see what impact it made. We even had our own website about it, visit the NHGS Switch off Website here: http://www.nhgs.co.uk/switchoff

Year 7 Forensic Science ‘A case of identity’ workshop

Forensic Science Day 09 PhotoOn Wednesday 4th November, Year 7 took part in a forensic Science activity. A forensic scientist came over from Australia. We had to solve the murder of Sally. She brought in evidence, which we used to narrow it down to three people. The evidence we used included Sally’s skirt, DNA and the fingerprints from her coke can. Three volunteers came up pretending to be the three remaining suspects: ex-boyfriend, friend from University and an electrician from Sally’s school. We then found out that the ex-boyfriend wore a wool jumper and wool was found on her skirt. The electrician was found running from the scene. Finally the friend’s fingerprints were found on the bottle that killed her. He later confessed that he wanted to more than just friends with Sally. Also Sally was rich and the police believe that she was attacked for those reasons. The friend was sentenced, has served his time and has been released. He still lives in Australia where this case happened. We enjoyed the activity and found it really interesting.

German Course

Joanna Lees (Y13) applied for, and was awarded, a place on a 2 week course in Germany. The British and German governments subsidise the course and only the very best students are successful in their application. Well done to Joanna! This is what she wrote about her experiences…

UK German Connection

Aneka Shoukat 11(3) went to Germany in July with an organisation called UK German Connection. UK German Connection is an organisation which allows students from the UK to visit Germany and students from Germany to visit the UK. She was chosen to go to the trip to Frankfurt with 14 other people from different parts of the UK. She went for three days and visited many places such as Wiesbaden and Schloss. Her favourite place was a German school called Liebigschule. They had a tour of the school and then talked to some students in German and they talked to us in English. What surprised Aneka was how good the German students were at speaking English. She said that she really enjoyed the whole trip and would love to go again.

German Interviews

A big WELL DONE to all those students who took part in the interviews held on the last Wednesday of the summer term. Lucas Hütten came into school for the day to conduct interviews in German with students in Years 9 and 10 who had submitted the best applications and CVs for a summer job working in an Eisdiele in Saarbrücken, Germany. Lucas was very impressed with the standards of German spoken by our students and the enthusiasm they demonstrated for this virtual job! Students he interviewed were David Greenwood, Deanna Holroyd, Sophie Hoyle, Siarlot Lloyd, Duncan Lomax, Oliver Marshall and Aneka Shoukat in Year 10 and Beth, Charlotte Greenwood, Jennifer Kidd, Elizabeth Lamb, Rosie Payne and Thomas Townend in Year 9.

Lucas that all our candidates came across as very confident, very mature and very brave to attempt such a daunting task!

The two candidates who were absolutely stunning in the interview and who were awarded the job were Elizabeth Lamb and David Greenwood. Lucas was bowled over by the quality of both Elizabeth and David – he said he had never heard such impressive German from students so young. Read their experiences here…
