Coast to Coast Students see new Sports Hall Facility off the Ground

As the school year comes to an end, The North Halifax Grammar School and Carefoot Plc are preparing to commence construction of a new £2.85m sports hall complete with classrooms, mini-gym and dance studio.

On Monday 18th July, Principal of The North Halifax Grammar School, Mr Andrew Fisher, was joined to mark the start of the project by members of the school’s Senior Leadership Team, the construction team and some of the students who have just completed the Coast 2 Coast charity cycle ride. Twenty-eight students from Year 9 and Year 10, along with five teachers were determined to raise funds to help kit out the new sports facility upon completion next summer.

The 182-mile-long route was completed over 5 days earlier in July and saw the team raise over £7,000.  Carefoot Plc, who have a great track record in delivering sports and education projects, were selected to deliver the project last month by the school and their consultants E3Cube Ltd.

The new sports hall is to be built at the rear of the school, so the first job for Carefoot’s contract manager, Anthony Brosnan, will be to install a temporary access road from the school entrance to the site. Work on the temporary access road will forge ahead over the summer break to minimise disruption to staff and students returning in September. During the construction of the new facility Carefoot will also be working with the school as part of their 6th form enrichment programme to provide opportunity for students to gain work experience in construction.

Snap to Grid
Halifax is the subject of an NHGS photography exhibition, which opened at The Dean Clough Galleries last Wednesday. Photographers from The North Halifax Grammar School were sent to 135 locations - based on a map containing a grid – to take their pictures.

The Halifax Photographic Grid Project was first exhibited in the same gallery in 2004. This new exhibition features the original project side-by-side with the 2015 repeat of the same project.

Dave Allen, Head of Photography at the school, said ‘These projects have always had a geographic approach to taking photographs, but this exhibition brings an element of time into the mix. Similar places have been photographed with a gap of 12 years.’

Since 2003 Halifax has changed a little, photography has evolved a lot and the participants, in the 2015 project, are a mixture of students, ex-students, parents, teachers, support staff and friends of the school. Most have studied photography to Advanced Level (including the parents and the teachers), while several are undergraduates or graduates.

Also featured is The Manchester Northern Quarter Photographic Grid, completed in 2014 in association with Redeye, the photography network. The exhibition runs for a week until Tuesday 7th June in the Mosaic/Upstairs Gallery at Dean Clough.

Mr Fisher
At The North Halifax Grammar School our motto is “Living to Learn, Learning to Live” and this encapsulates both our enthusiasm for academic study and our understanding that we are preparing our students for the challenges of adult life.  We are a selective 11-18 school with a particular focus on the sciences and mathematics but we believe strongly in the need for young people to experience a broad and balanced education, which includes foreign languages, literature, art, music, computing, history, geography, physical education and design and technology. Our teachers are specialists in their subjects who communicate their passion for learning but also offer excellent and supportive pastoral care to ensure that our students really enjoy and get the best out of their time at school. We offer an outstanding range of trips, visits, clubs and activities that allow everyone to try new things, and to find and develop all sorts of talents and enthusiasms. We are very proud to have been designated an “Outstanding Provider” by Ofsted no fewer than four times. But we are even more proud of the feedback from parents and students which tells us that this is a happy school in which young people develop knowledge, values and attitudes that make them succeed and their families proud.
Welcome to our website and to our community.

Mr. A.G. Fisher (Principal)
